23 Things was originally started as a means for librarians within the same public library to do some professional development related to Web 2.0 technology, and be able to do that professional development in their own time.
I have modified the program to fit the professional development needs of GJSD teachers with relation to using current Web 2.0 technologies. All of this Web 2.0 technology is available for free online.
Web 2.0 technologies includes using websites and technologies such as Flickr, Photobucket, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, folksonomies, Delicious, You Tube, wikis, mashups, Animoto, Zoho, Google Docs, RSS, etc...
How does it work?
- All participants will use this blog to get the weekly assignments.
- Participants will then complete the assignments in their own time before the end of the given time period (1 week). Every assignment relates to exploring technologies that have potential for use in the classroom or that can be used to further the professional development of the teacher.
- Participants will create their own blog and comment on the Web 2.0 technologies as they are explored.
- This will continue for the 23 things that are explored, and last about 11 weeks (see dates below).
When will this program run?
21st September - 3rd December
However, this blog will remain live forever. The above time period is for those wishes to complete this professional development program and receive a prize for completion & official professional development hours for the GJSD log.
Why should I take part?
- Professional development that counts on the professional development log (17 hours credit).
- To enable staff to become familiar with new technologies that are already being used daily in other schools.
- To push forward the use of technology in the district.
- To enable a more focused and appreciated approach to helping today's students learn using today's techniques and technologies.
- To start a dialogue.
- It's actually FUN to learn new things!
- To feel empowered.
You mentioned prizes. How and what can I win?
1) A USB flash drive for all that complete the whole 23 Things within the time period.
2) A netbook for one of those who completed the whole 23 Things program within the time period.
OK, so I completed the 23 Things. Now what?
Write down your success in your Professional Development log.
Depending on the success of the program and the desire of the participants there is the potential to explore Web 2.0 further and follow a Web 2.0 Part II program of professional development.
